Stop TELLING me to buy local

By RFraser

Yes, supporting local businesses is important and worthy. Saying that it’s not would be like saying world peace isn’t important.

But in reality, there are many considerations that will influence my decision, not just one. And, as selfish as it sounds, I’m usually going to make decisions that are in my own best interests.

Firstly, when I’m looking for products or services I want something that fulfils my need, i.e. is fit for purpose. I want it to be good if not great value. I also want friendly, prompt, helpful, efficient and knowledgeable service.

I also love supporting any business, local or otherwise, that is having a genuine ‘crack’ at being a conscious business – i.e. those that care about their customers, staff, suppliers, community and the environment.

But truth be told, if they aren’t first providing a product or service that is just right for what I need at a price that is fair AND giving decent service, they still won’t get a look in with me.

The bottom line is stop telling me I should buy from you because you’re local and put your energy instead into building a cracking good business. You won’t need to persuade me that I should buy from you. I’ll not only do that, I will be spontaneously driven to tell the world about you.
