When we talk about values being at the heart of a business and it is all about aligning to those values we miss something critical. Whilst alignment to business values is important, it is not the values of the business that create inspiration or engagement that drives productivity and profitability.
Personal values drive individual behaviour. If you want to tap into a person’s talent, intelligence and potential it is their personal values not the business values that are the key to engagement and productivity. Building a great culture starts with knowing and fulfilling individual values.
Linking personal values to the business values is the alignment needed. Yet very few people know their own values explicitly. Even fewer have made the connection to work. There is a disconnect. That’s why 66% of Australian workers are not engaged and are under-utilised despite business values.
